Understanding the price drivers of successful apps in the mobile app market

2016

In this paper, we take the perspective of app developers. Specifically, based on a sample of top paid apps from three major app stores, i.e., App Store, Google Play, and Blackberry World, we construct a hedonic price model to examine the role of relevant factors in price formation in the app market. Our results suggest a strong evidence of two-sided market effects. In fact, the lower price charged for apps operating as two-sided markets reflect the strategy of subsidising users, due to the positive cross-side externalities they exert on valuable third parties. Surprisingly, the effects of trialability, in-app purchase and mechanisms to build reputation are not significant in the context of …

The economics of platform competition: compatibility, standardization and piracy

2013

This thesis studies the platform competition with compatibility, standardization and piracy. In the first chapter we study the role played by expectations, the strength of the network externality and product differentiation in the strategic decisions of the platforms regarding compatibility and price competition. The decision problem is modeled as a two-stage game. In the first stage platforms simultaneously and non-cooperatively choose the degree of compatibility and in the second stage platforms compete in prices. More specifically, we solve a two-stage game in which duopolists decide simultaneously and non cooperatively the degree of compatibility between their products and they compete …

Internet two sided market regulation: A zero-ratong analysis from a theoretical and experimental approach

2022

Factors influencing the pricing of applications in the Apple App Store: A developers’ perspective

2011

Many know how Apple Inc. owes its success in Mobile Commerce to the introduction of the new “App Store” business model. This new market is characterized by the opening to third party mobile apps, which are distributed to consumers through the App Store. This paper investigates factors that might influence the pricing of applications in the Apple Mobile Application Store. By reviewing the existing literature on the issue and analyzing the strategic features characterizing the App Store, we detect three main factors that could influence prices for apps, that is the number of developed apps, the presence of two-sided network externalities and developer’s specialization. An empirical analysis o…

Verso la disciplina giuridica della sharing economy

2015
